Richard Bach - JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL

As a pilot and as a writer, Richard Bach empathizes with a great flyer; the seagull. His hero, the young seagull Jonathan, goes in against all traditions and explores and discovers fabulous aviation techniques. The other seagulls regard flying only as a means to secure food. So he becomes an outcast in the society of seagulls, which incidentally is a lot like the human society. He then discovers other realities and ultimately even finds he has mystical powers. To share his newfound knowledge, he returns to the society of seagulls. For he has discovered something that is more valuable than flying, but also harder: the art of loving another as yourself.
"To begin with," he said heavily, "you've got to understand that a seagull is an unlimited Idea of freedom, an image of the Great Gull, and your whole body, from wingtip to wingtip, is nothing more than thought itself."
